MD Osprey:
Just to follow-up on Robert Steele's great sighting ...
From the MD/DC Records Committee's DC database here ...
http://www.mdbirds.org/mddcrc/pdf/dcdatabase.pdf ... there is only
one related record for DC from 1988 ...
frigatebird species (Fregata sp. )
DC Review Code = 2: Reviewable anywhere in the District of Columbia.
DC/0000-005
Accepted-Group
10/03/1988
DC / Potomac River
One adult male.
... this is the only accepted frigatebird record, but it was for an
adult male and wasn't reliably separated from very rare, but
hypothetical, other frigatebird species. It was accepted as
"Frigatebird, sp." There are less than a handful of records of
Greater and Lesser Frigatebirds for North America, so although
unlikely, they are possible and species separation and elimination is
important.
Today's sighting would be the first specifically for Magnificent
Frigatebird for DC. Any detailed reports/photos, etc. would be
welcomed by the records committee.
Check our committee web page, in the reporting section, for some
helpful (but not required) templates, guidelines. There is even a
on-line reporting form ...
