Hey all,
Visited the Chesapeake Bay Env Center today. There were good numbers of birders there too, so I am sure I may I've missed something but this was one of my best shorebird days in MD in terms of species diversity and abundance since I moved here back in Oct 09. In addition to the previously reported Am. White Pelican (which is always a treat), we saw the following:
Stilt Sandpiper (20-25)
Pectoral Sandpiper (15-20)
Solitary Sandpiper (1)
Spotted Sandpiper (2)
Short-billed Dowitcher (6-10)
Greater Yellowlegs (10-20) - actually saw 2 greater yellowlegs hovering over the water for ~ 30 sec each several different times; never saw this behavior before from them)
Lesser Yellowlegs (50 +)
Semipalmated Plover (15-20)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (hundreds) - despite a thourough search of the hoards, I could't pull out any rarer peeps.
Least Sandpiper (hundreds)
Killdeer (10-12)
Tricolored Heron (1)
Snowy Egret (30+)
Green Heron (1)
Great Egret (~ 6)
Least Tern (at least 2 juvs)
Bald Eagle (1 adult)
Osprey (ubiquitous)
Brown-headed Nuthatch
Pine Warbler (several including juvs)
E. Bluebird (1 juv)
E. Phoebe
Eastern Wood-peewee
Purple Martin
along with the more common species.
Good Birding,
