On our way to the beach from Bethesda this morning just after 10:30
a.m., we had gotten most of the way over the Bay Bridge when we were
surprised to have a short glimpse of a sub-adult Northern Gannet
gliding right across in front of us. Probably there were other
Gannets working the Bay too.

At Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (Horsehead), the single
American White Pelican remains in the large pond near the covered
picnic building, together with 40-50 egrets, mostly Snowy, and a
single juvenile Tricolored Heron. No Avocets or Ibises to be
seen. Shorebird numbers were down from what we had seen a couple of
weeks ago, but there was still good diversity -- both Yellowlegs,
Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers, and a small flock of Semipalmated
Plovers. Possibly there were additional waders, but it was HOT and
we needed to be on our way.
