An AMERICAN AVOCET was on the Anacostia River this (8/14) morning at
Anacostia River Park. It was on the quickly diminishing mudflat across
from the swimming pool. It took off and flew upriver, only to reappear a
few minutes later (after Gary Allport, Frank Hawkins & friend arrived).
It wanted to land but couldn't find a place so it continued downriver
out of sight. We left around 9am and Gary & I went to Hains Pt. A few
minutes at the point and Gary picked the bird up flying over the south
end of National Airport towards the mouth of 4-mile Run. No place to
land, so it continued down the Potomac and was lost heading towards Blue
Plains. Around 20 minutes later, after Gary had left, I refound the
bird flying back upriver and lost it as it headed back up the Anacostia.
No idea where it is now.

Good birding,
