I ventured to Greenbridge on Triadelphia Reservoir this morning after the
rain had nearly stopped at home. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, it
was still raining heavily at Greenbridge. I met Brad Cernohorsky there and
we persevered through the rain as it gradually slackened.
Most of the birds were on the small island that has formed north of
Greenbridge at the end of the peninsula. I counted 9 Killdeer, 1 AVOCET
(faded breeding plumage), 2 Spotted Sandpipers, 3 Least Sandpipers, 1
Pectoral Sandpiper, 4 adult CASPIAN TERNS, and 1 immature FORSTER'S TERN.
While we were there 8 calling juvenile Short-billed Dowitchers dropped in
for a few minutes before departing and an adult RUDDY TURNSTONE flew by. At
various times we saw all the birds in the air. For listers, I believe this
island is in Montgomery County but all the birds we saw flew around and
probably were seen over Howard County also.
Later we visited Browns Bridge but the rain had covered the mud flats and
there were few shorebirds to be found in the grass, only Killdeer, Spotted,
Least, and Pectoral Sandpipers.
