My brother Mike and I birded Worcester County yesterday. The weather was
good, shorebirds continue to move, and warblers numbers are increasing.
Some of the highlights:
Assateague - Bayside at predawn and dawn:
- Bobolink - 50 - very conservative estimate. Always difficult to tell
if one bird is calling 5 times as it flies over or if its 5 birds
calling once. There could've been 200 or more.
- Prothonotary Warbler - 2 - not a common bird on Assateague
Assateague - Ferry Landing
- BAIRD'S SANDPIPER - 1 - a juvie feeding on the marsh edge near Life of
the Marsh, but not actually viewable from that spot. About 75 yards away
from Ferry Landing. Immediately recognizable as a long-winged peep.
Fairly larger than nearby Least Sandpipers. All dark bill, sloping
slightly downward. Buffy breast markings with white belly. Once it flew,
scaly appearance of upperparts was very noticeable.
Skimmer Island
- Marbled Godwit - 2
- Sandwich Tern - 5
Truitt's Landing
- water level way too high for many shorebirds
- Stilt Sandpiper - 1
Assateague State Park (sea watch to end the day)
...impressive stream of southbound terns:
- Black Tern - 22
- Common Tern - 94
- Loggerhead Turtle just offshore
