I saw 16 Little Blue Herons at Black Marsh - aka North Point State Park (se
Baltimore County) on 09/05.
Specifically, take the east path near the pay gate until you come to the
wetlands on the left hand side.
15 were first year birds; of those 14 were all white and one had splotchy gray
on its white body.
There was also one adult bird. All young birds had pale gray bills and light
yellow-green legs.
All the birds were located fairly close together, and it looks like a breeding
colony occurred at the park. 5 of the birds were in a tree for a while. I did
not see any nests. Are there any previous records of breeding Little Blue Herons
in Baltimore County? The Yellow Book says not.
Incidentally, I did see one Adult Little Blue Heron on May 16 at the park. the
heavy snows last winter cleared away a great deal of the vegetation from the
wetlands -- making the habitat more favorable for herons.
Good Birding!
