A very enjoyable day at Cromwell Valley as the first good push of migrant hawks was recorded this season. Other highlights included Cape May Warbler, Wilsons Warbler and Swainsons Thrush at the Hawkwatch site, each one posing for photos! Most of the Broadwings were very high and difficult to spot. Pleasant temperatures and 15+ observers and visitors made the afternoon quite splendid! Many of the Hawkwatch sites here in the east recorded similar numbers today.
Beginning on Sept. 18th we plan on having observers at the watch-site every day through the 26th to record what should be the peak Broad-winged Hawk flight period. Last year we recorded 1,808 BWs on the 19th, 1,883 BWs on the 20th and 2,391 BWs on the 25th.
