Andy Smith, Brad Cernohorsky and Mark Scarff recorded the largest single day flight at Cromwell Valley Park today with a total of 3,453 hawks seen. WOW!! Between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM 2,740 Broad-winged Hawks were observed in numerous, non-stop kettles and streams. This movement was spread out across the sky with groups over both ridges and many directly over the watch site. Fortunately the BWs were not at extreme altitudes yet and the observers had some stunning views. The largest kettle was 620 BWs, probably our largest single kettle on record. This is the third 3000+ BW day we've had in less than a week!!
A quick check of other hawkwatch sites in the mid-atlantic region continues to puzzle us somewhat, as our numbers were higher than most. Go to hawkcount.org for comparisons.
