The North Beach marsh is indeed a rapidly-changing kaleidoscope. Here is our
list at 6 pm:

Mallard 4
Snowy Egret 20 (down from 55 last week)
Gr Blue Heron 1
Red Knot 1
Semi-palm Plover 10
Black-bellied Plover (next to the Knot, affording a nice comparison)
Least Sandpiper 30  (we could make none into Western)
Pectoral Sandpiper 1
Gr Y'legs 2
L Y'legs 1
R-b Gull 1

Red Knot is nice for CV Co; but of the much rarer Buff-br we saw no trace.

Subject: [MDOSPREY] 9/24/2010 Schooley Mill Park HO and North Beach CV

Hi Folks!

I spent most of this hot morning walking the woodland trails at Schooley
Mill Park in Howard County. I started at the equestrian area ["A" in the
Birding  Howard County guidebook] where there was a nice feeding flock of
bluebirds and  Chippies by the parking area and a nice mixed feeding flock
including 2  Blackburnians and a Bay-breasted. The immature female Mourning
Warbler

was along  the wood/field edge here. Another good flock was found near
"Post 11" on the  equestrian trail, no doubt attracted to the sunlit glade water

gurgling over the  rocks.

I checked a few other places: Pigtail, Big Branch and Cattail Creek. The
only noteables were a Nashville Warbler at Big Branch and a Black-billed
Cuckoo  at Triadelphia Lake Road. Shorebird numbers and diversity were down from

9/19 at  Cattail.

My last stop was the marsh at North Beach. The birds are a little different
every time. Today's highlight was a juvenile Buff-breasted Sandpiper [I
think it  is the first Calvert County Record]. The Red Knot reported earlier
in the day by  Tyler Bell was not to be found, but a juvenile Black-bellied
Plover was.
