Hi all,
My brother, Rob, and I did some birding Sunday in Garrett County.
We started the day at Finzel Swamp where it was fairly birdy despite
being overcast and chilly. The highlights were:

Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2
Red-shouldered Hawk
Eastern Screech-Owl
Blue-headed Vireo
Philadelphia Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 12
Nashville Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle) - 8
Black-throated Green Warbler - 5
Blackpoll Warbler - 2
Common Yellowthroat
White-crowned Sparrow (Eastern)
Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-colored) - 2
Scarlet Tanager

Next we did a quick check of Piney Reservoir, but the only birds of
note were a single Lesser Yellowlegs and a FOS Winter Wren. The
highlight was watching three River Otters. From there it was off to
Youghiogheny Reservoir. On the drive over we stopped to watch three
Cooper's Hawks doing a sort of courtship display which they are
apparently known to do during migrantion. As soon as we got out of the
car at the Yough we were greeted by 2-3 Red Squirrels and a migrant
flock including:

Brown Creeper
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 3
Tennessee Warbler - 2
Hooded Warbler - Rob only, a late adult male.
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle) - 2
Black-throated Green Warbler - 2
Palm Warbler (Western) - 4
Palm Warbler (Yellow) - 2

Sparrows were abundant on and around the reservoir, but waterfowl and
shorebirds were scarce. The highlight was flushing a small rail we
weren't able to ID or relocate. Probably a Sora. The birds we saw
included:

Common Merganser - 28
Ruffed Grouse (drumming)
rail sp.
Killdeer - 43
Solitary Sandpiper - 2
Lesser Yellowlegs - 2
Least Sandpiper - 3
American Pipit - 18
Lincoln's Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow

A brief stop at Swallow Falls SP yielded:

Golden-crowned Kinglets
Magnolia Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler
Blackpoll Warbler

At Broadford Lake the only waterfowl present were:

Canada Goose - 430
Wood Duck - 5
Mallard - 8
Ruddy Duck - 5

On the way over to Trout Run WWTP we did some birding along the roads
and found several Lincoln's Sparrows and numerous Palm Warblers. Our
best water birds of the day came at Trout Run where we found:

Canada Goose - 223
Wood Duck - 14
Mallard - 12
Northern Shoveler - 2
Northern Pintail - 1
White-crowned Sparrow - 2

After a little more roadside birding we ended the day at Mt. Nebo WMA
where it was mostly quiet except a probable Merlin, a Barred Owl, and
another Winter Wren.
