This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, October 5, at 11:30 AM.

Top birds this week are NORTHERN WHEATEAR* in VA and CASSIN'S SPARROW* in
MD.

Other birds of interest include ducks, AMERICAN BITTERN, GLOSSY IBIS, GOLDEN
EAGLE, SORA, shorebirds, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOW,
SHORT-EARED OWL, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, COMMON RAVEN,
BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH, SEDGE WREN, warblers, sparrows, YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

While many of our fall resident and migrant species, such as RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES, began showing up in the area in small numbers a few weeks ago,
they really began increasing in numbers this past week with reports of
several species of ducks, 75 PIED-BILLED GREBES at the Occoquan NWR,
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, both kinglets, BROWN CREEPERS, WINTER WRENS,
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES, HERMIT THRUSHES, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, WHITE-THROATED and
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, PURPLE FINCHES, and PINE
SISKINS; most being reported from a variety of locations.

On Oct 2 a NORTHERN WHEATEAR* was found, photographed, and videoed at the
small boat launch pull-off from the Chincoteague Road causeway, Accomack Co,
VA.

The CASSIN'S SPARROW* which was seen at Point Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD
last week was seen again on Sep 28 near the lighthouse.

Five SURF SCOTERS were seen Oct 4 at Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD.

An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen Oct 2 at Point Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD.
There was also one along Rumbley Point Rd, Somerset Co, MD on Oct 3.

Seven GLOSSY IBIS flew over downtown Charlottesville, VA on Oct 1.

The Mendota Hawkwatch, Washington Co, VA, in the far southwestern corner of
the state, counted its third GOLDEN EAGLE of the season on Oct 1.

A SORA was found on Oct 3 at Little Patuxent Oxbow Lake Nature Preserve,
Anne Arundel Co, MD.

A juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was found at Papermill Flats, Baltimore
Co, MD on Sept 29. 

Two HUDSONIAN GODWITS were found Sept 28 at the Woodland Beach Wildlife
Area, DE. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was found Oct 1 just south of Rte 50 on the
east side of Rte 8 across from Farmer John's produce stand in grassy field
on Kent Island, Queen Anne's Co, MD. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was also seen Oct 2
flying down Jug Bay, Anne Arundel Co, MD.

The RED KNOT and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at North Beach marsh, Calvert Co,
MD last week, were seen again on Sept 28. Ten STILT SANDPIPERS were found
Sept 30 at Triadelphia Reservoir, Montgomery Co/Howard Co, MD. Four were
there on Oct 2.
 
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen Oct 2 at Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA.
Another was seen at Little Bennett Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD on Oct
3.

Two CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOWS were seen interacting in Cape Charles, Northampton
Co, VA on Sept 28.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen Sept 28 at Taylor's Gut, the large pond across
from the Woodland Beach Wildlife Area, DE.

A well-photographed healthy adult male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD turned up at a
feeder in a backyard in Woodbridge, Prince William Co, VA, on Sept 29. It
was banded on Oct 1 and seen again on Oct 3.

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen Oct 2 at Upper Watts Branch Park, Montgomery
Co, MD. One was also seen at Huntley Meadows Pk, Fairfax Co, VA, the same
day and another along Smoky Rd at Patuxent River, Calvert Co, MD.

A COMMON RAVEN was seen Sept 30 perched on a snag on Green Rd just east of
Jacksonville in Baltimore Co, MD. COMMON RAVENS were also observed Oct 3 at
Little Bennett Regional Pk, Montgomery Co, MD.

A BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH visited a feeder in Dry Fork, Pittsylvania Co, VA on
Oct 2.

A SEDGE WREN was reported from southern Albemarle Co, VA, on Sept 28.
Another SEDGE WREN was found Oct 4 at the Swan Creek/Cox Creek facility near
the Key Bridge, Anne Arundel Co, MD.

Warblers continued to be reported from a number of different locations this
past week  with reports from Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC throughout the
week; Theodore Roosevelt Island, NW DC, on Oct 1; Brookside Gardens,
Wheaton, Montgomery Co, MD, on Oct 2; Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA,
on Oct 2 and 3; Huntley Meadows Pk throughout the week; Bles Pk, Loudoun Co,
VA on Oct 3; and Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, VA on Oct 3.

Sparrow numbers increased dramatically during the week. Once again there
were many sightings of LINCOLN'S SPARROW with reports from Fort Ward Park,
Alexandria, VA on Sept 28; Brookside Gardens, Wheaton, Montgomery Co, MD, on
Oct 2; Howard Co Conservancy, MD, on Oct 2; Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA,
on Oct 2; and Little Bennett Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD, on Oct 3. As
many as 25 SWAMP SPARROWS were observed at Occoquan Bay NWR on Oct 3.

The YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD at Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia Beach,VA, was seen
again on Sept 28 and 29. 

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was found on Oct 3 at Little Patuxent Oxbow Lake Nature
Preserve, Anne Arundel Co, MD.
