The 5th annual Schoolhouse Pond Big Sit is this Sunday (October 10th) from dawn to dusk at the observation platform at the rear of the pond. Feel free to join the Marlboro Flaming County Seaters for all day or just a few hours at this Patuxent Bird Club/PG Audubon Society event. We've recorded from 62 - 66 species on previous years. This is a fun annual event, and we typically get a decent amount of bird activity along the nearby woodland edge and large numbers of flyover birds throughout the day (yesterday during lunch I had 480+ flyover Laughing Gulls). So, I hope that people can drop by, even if it is just for part of the day. The more eyes the better. It has been a good year at the pond, with 156 species being recorded so far, including February's Black-headed Gull and Tree Sparrows, March's Greater White-fronted Goose, this summer's Common Moorhen, and decent numbers of migrant warblers this fall. Hopefully, there will be lots of birds this Sunday. Of course, no reservations are necessary.
