I spent a few hours at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens this (sat, 10/8)
morning under beautiful conditions. As expected, the Western Kingbird
that Tom found yesterday (great find, by the way) was no where to be
found. But there was a lot of activity, which made up for it.
Highlights include TENNESSEE & NASHVILLE WARBLERS, LINCOLN'S &
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and my 2nd DC SORA. The Sora
was in the marsh off the short boardwalk leg, almost exactly where I
heard my first one about 10 years ago to the day. It called a few times
but never showed itself.
From there I went to the Natl. Arboretum where I ran into Team Hershey
and also saw at least 5 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, a PINE WARBLER, and 2
EASTERN WOOD-PEWEES in the Grove of the States. 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS
gave nice views over the big field. A few DARK-EYED JUNCOS were about,
as were lots of sparrows (but nothing out of the ordinary).
Good birding,
Paul Pisano
