Hi Everyone,

Below are some highlights from birding the lower Eastern Shore after the Assateague Big Sit on Sunday (10/10). Mike Burchett will be posting results from that event in the near future. I joined Jim Brighton, Rob Ostrowski, and Mike Ostrowski in birding other sites on the lower Eastern Shore from noon to dusk. Here are the somewhat abridged eBird lists.

* High tide. The godwits were two of the very few birds on the island.

Non-avian: Mourning Cloak (5-10; fresh), Red Admiral (100s), Anglewing sp. (50), Cloudless Sulfur (5), Common Checkered Skipper (3-5), Pearl Crescent, Orange Sulfur, Cabbage White, Common Green Darner (5), Carolina Saddlebags. Really impressive butterfly density in the orchard.

Clapper/King Rail--9. Very vocal at dusk. Recorded a few minutes of calls. Birds here are generally considered Clappers, but playing it safe as rail migration is still underway. Maryland eBirders: Note that "Clapper/King Rail" is now available by default on all checklists where both species are expected.
Virginia Rail--6
SORA--5. Good count. Calling actively in three different sections of the marsh. Keek notes with a longer, whinier version mixed in at times. Recorded some audio.
Laughing Gull--520. Heavy dusk commute to the west.
Herring Gull--20
gull sp.--600. Heavy commute to the west at dusk. 
Great Horned Owl--2
Red-bellied Woodpecker--1
Northern Flicker (Yellow-shafted)--2
Winter Wren--1. Calling.
