Hi Everyone,

I did some afternoon birding yesterday and today, landing a few nice birds despite having to start after noon. Before meeting up with Stan Arnold yesterday, Rob Ostrowski and I were excited to flush an AMERICAN BITTERN at Sands Road. We had good numbers of expected sparrows, but didn't turn up a Vesper or other less common species. A LITTLE YELLOW (butterfly) was new for me at this site, and of course my new latest.

Today I visited Fort Smallwood in the early afternoon, hoping to relocate BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEEs reported there earlier by Matt Grey. I did not re-find those birds, but I did have an immature WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, my first-of-season PIED-BILLED GREBE and DARK-EYED JUNCO here, and a continuing BLACKPOLL WARBLER.

My wife Becky and I made a few stops on the upper shore this afternoon. The only surprise at Terrapin Nature Park was another BLACKPOLL WARBLER. The two Blackpolls today are my new latest in Maryland by an additional 8 days. Horsehead (CBEC) has high water levels that will be good for ducks, but probably won't host many shorebirds for a while. The Route 309 ponds held a PIED-BILLED GREBE and some RUDDY DUCKs. On the Caroline side of Tuckahoe SP we had five flyover PURPLE FINCHes, RED-BREASTED and WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHes, and my first big flock of JUNCOs of the season. We had juncos at most stops today.

Good birding,

Bill
