I hear Wild Turkey almost daily in the spring, but rarely actually see
them.

Felicia and all,

You have just voiced the great frustration of most turkey hunters. These
birds are amazingly elusive. Laura and I just got back from a week in
Highland County, VA and had 3 fly across the road in front of us - the only
ones we saw all week. And this after driving/walking back mountain roads in
the heart of some of the best habitat in the world for them.

The best story I ever heard to depict this came from a guy I worked with. He
was in a deer stand with a view of a trail off to his right. He saw another
hunter coming up the trail from his left. Uphill on his right he could see a
turkey coming down the trail toward the hunter. He watched as the turkey
slipped off the trail behind a tree and kept the tree perfectly between
itself and the hunter while the hunter passed within just a few feet of it.
I can attest that I almost stepped on one once before it flew. And I thought
grouse were noisy. And startling.
