I was working in Pocomoke this morning and decided to stop back at Rumbly Point on the chance of relocating the Lapland Longspur before heading back north to Harford County. I did manage to relocate him, although not quite as easily as the first time on Saturday. He was foraging in the weeds about two feet off the road along the side of the chanel of open water on the left as you head out to the point. This time I checked my odometer as I passed the gate to Irish Grove. I initially found him .7 mi. from the Irish Grove gate and he stayed in that immediate area over the next 1 1/2 hours. He actually spooked a couple different times over that span, but only took short flights and landed within 75 yards of the same spot. He's very approachable and will allow you to get within 20-25 feet comfortably if you approach on foot and move slowly. I watched him feeding on the seeds of some short grasses for quite a while and was amazed by the technique he used to get at seeds that were slightly out of his reach. He would stand next to a plant and stand tiptoe stretching his neck to try to reach the seeds. If that didn't work, he would walk to the other side of the grass stalk and literally mash it with his foot, then move along the bent over stalk to get to the seed. I took a bunch of pictures and I hope some of them will capture a bit of this action. I'll post a link to the pictures when I get a chance. He's very likely been at this location for at least three days and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he sticks around as long as the food lasts and the weather doesn't change too much.
