There was a perched female American Kestrel on a football goalpost in
Kenilworth Park, DC, this morning (11/11) at around 10 a.m. As I
watched the Kestrel, an immature Peregrine Falcon whistled over my
head and quartered the park very close to the ground for a few
minutes without catching anything. It then perched high in a bare
tree in the company of many crows. I was surprised -- but probably
shouldn't have been --to note that the Peregrine was a bit smaller
than the crows, most of which were American. I was able to take some
halfway decent photos from right under the tree before the bird (a
young male, I think) eventually flew off and disappeared.
An American Pipit flew over in the same area, but I didn't see any on
the ground.
