I haven't really checked the main areas for Red-headed Woodpeckers
yet but with a good acorn crop they could be common this winter. I heard one
yesterday ( 11-12) in the same area I had one in mid-September. They are
absent from an area they were present last winter.
The way to look for them is to walk across the dike at the
impoundments, turn right (west) after you enter the fields and walk along
the edge of the woods checking the dead trees until you find one. May hear
one before you see it.
Their main nesting area is the group of dead trees you can see to the
west of the main dike.
