Dovekie Enthusiasts-

We are again running our annual winter Dovekie hunt and pelagic trip on
Saturday, February 5. We'll be sailing from Fisherman's Wharf in beautiful
Lewes, DE, and will be aboard either the 85' Thelma Dale IV or the 110'
Thelma Dale V. These are comfortable boats with highly experienced captains
and crews who, by now, understand our particular brand of insanity. They
each have a birdable top deck, a heated cabin, and separate men's and ladies
facilities. As usual, we plan on visiting both Delaware (sorry George) and
Maryland (sorry Frank) waters. We often bird right down the state line so
you can count a bird crossing the bow or stern in both states!

So far (he said nervously) we have never missed Dovekie on a far offshore
trip like this out of DE, NJ, or NY at this time of year. It's normal to
find from one to several hundred, and our record count for a DE/MD trip was
over 4,000. Other birds we've seen on this trip in the past include
Razorbill, Common and Thick-billed Murre, Atlantic Puffin, Northern Fulmar,
Northern Gannet, Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and
Black-legged Kittiwake. We also expect to find more common seabirds such as
Common and Red-throated Loons, Bonaparte's Gull, all 3 species of scoter,
Long-tailed Duck, and Red-breasted Merganser.

This can be a great trip for photographers, with Gannets often coming so
close to check out the chum that you can clearly see their blue eyes.
Kittiwakes, Iceland Gulls, and other gulls will often stay for extended
periods of time while dining on the delicious chum we'll be shoveling out.
With a bit of luck, we might get some alcids to sit on the water and pose
for us.

The trip cost is $165, and the boat sails at 6:00 AM, returning at roughly
6:00 PM. To make a reservation, go to our web site or you can contact us by
phone or e-mail at

Hope to see you aboard.
