Point Lookout Lists (11/20); Photos

Hi Everyone,

Following up on Mike Ostrowski's post from Saturday night, below are the full lists from Point Lookout and vicinity on 11/20 (with John Hubbell, Mikey Lutmerding, Mike Ostrowski). There are some late species and good counts that I wanted to make sure we posted.

Point Lookout State Park (AM)

Canada Goose--4
Tundra Swan--21. One immature on the pond, 20 others flew over in one flock.
Wood Duck--27. Several flocks early in the morning. A good count here.
American Black Duck--4
Greater Scaup--2
Lesser Scaup--5
Greater/Lesser Scaup--36
Surf Scoter--5
Black Scoter--78. Conspicuous and vocal today.
Surf/Black Scoter--60
Long-tailed Duck--8. First of season. Many more noted in the afternoon.
Bufflehead--398. Many more noted during more thorough scanning in the afternoon.
Common Goldeneye--1. First of season.
Hooded Merganser--19. Several flyby flocks.
COMMON LOON--524. * A high count. Very impressive, constant flight of Common Loons, all southbound over the Bay. Clicked/counted them for about one hour, so this is just a small snapshot of the passing loons this morning.
NORTHERN GANNET--43. A good count, many of them close to shore.
Brown Pelican--21
Double-crested Cormorant--38
Great Cormorant--3. Roosting on stakes near the causeway.
Great Blue Heron--1
Turkey Vulture--8
OSPREY--1
Bald Eagle--2
Sharp-shinned Hawk--1
Red-shouldered Hawk--1
Dunlin--1. Heard calling as it flew by the point. Bill and Mikey only.
Bonaparte's Gull--62
Laughing Gull--3. Many of the distant gull sp. were probably of this species.

Great Black-backed Gull--55
gull sp.--400. Est. Large feeding frenzy well offshore.
Forster's Tern--10
BARRED OWL--1. Unexpected. Spotted by Bill perched near the road and seen very well and close for a few moments before it flushed, crossing the road in front of everyone. New PLSP bird for most if not all of us.

Downy Woodpecker--2
Northern Flicker (Yellow-shafted)--3
WESTERN KINGBIRD--Spotted in flight by Mikey. Mikey noted distinctive flight, yellow belly, white outer tail feathers, etc.
BLUE-HEADED VIREO--1 (solitarius) * Late. Photos.
Blue Jay--2
American Crow--14
CAVE SWALLOW--2. ** Rare. Flew over the picnic area at 8:20 a.m. and spotted by Mikey Lutmerding. Later relocated in the same area by Patty Craig. Brief views showed tawny-colored throat with no dark border below, dark (not white) forehead, and similar rusty-orange rump. Light underparts and squared tail.

BLACK SCOTER--442. Impressive collection, especially around the causeway and fishing pier. Distinctive waaaaaa calls audible in most places around the whole point.
LONG-TAILED DUCK--312. Nice count, mainly in several large flocks south of the causeway.
BUFFLEHEAD--1225. Carefully counted by 2s at causeway and points south.

ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER--1. * Uncommon. Spotted as it flew in near the entrance to the picnic area; heard chipping Field Sparrow-like calls. Very cooperative, allowing some decent photos; my favorite encounter with this species in Maryland.

Chipping Sparrow--4. Foraging on the sunny Potomac side in the late afternoon.

I'd like to echo Debbie Terry's thanks to Jim Peters' for another great find. Keith Costley said the PURPLE SANDPIPER was a new record for Fort McHenry (#258). Only my second time seeing this species away from Worcester Co. in Maryland.
