Jane Kostenko and I were headed over to Solomons to the Calvert Marine Museum's
annual Christmas party. Jane plays the Otter and since the eye holes aren't
anatomically correct for humans, she requires a handler which is me. Anyway,
earlier this week as I drove across the bridge to work, I noticed a collection
of geese in the field immediately south of the bridge. A quick scan on several
days yielded nothing other than Canada Geese. The flock was substantially larger
today which makes sense because I am usually driving by around 7:10 and geese
stream in constantly at that hour. So, we spun down under the bridge and a
during quick scan of the field, I found the presumed returning Greater
White-fronted Goose down near the river and barns. A couple of guys were just
getting ready to do some kite flying and at noon precisely, the whole flock
lifted off and flew further south toward the boat rental end of the field (where
the Iceland Gull was eons ago).
Anyway, this is the third year in a row that a/the Greater White-fronted Goose
has been found here. Last year it was a one day wonder then was relocated on
Turner Road by John Hubbell. If you don't find it in the bridge field, check
Turner Road!
