This sounds like a manifestation of the "Carroll County trapping
effect" noted earlier on this list by Gerry Tarbell. Gerry had
observed that once a person enters Carroll County, escape is
impossible because no roads lead out of the county. Who knew the
same effect could apply to a bird, even though the bird does not
require roads?
