Following Rick Sussman's discovery of at least 4 Short-eared Owls at the
private Oaks Landfill during the Triadelphia CBC Saturday, I thought I'd
see if I'd get lucky and be able to see one on the small portion of the
covered landfill that can be seen from publicly accessible land. So I
parked in the gravel parking lot for the equestrian trail that is near
the landfill entrance (opposite Fieldcrest Rd where it intersects with
108) and walked about 100 yards north on the grass field to get a closer
look at the corner of the landfill mound. Sure enough, around 5:00pm
(just after sunset) a SEOW appeared at the corner and put on a good
show. Pretty far off, but great to see these guys in the Piedmont!
Good birding!
