Hi all
Barry and I decided today would be a good chance to see the sparrow
without too much hassle and it proved a good strategy. We arrived a little
before 10 AM with only one other birder (from PA) present, and he had just
been looking at it! Within a minute the target appeared, feeding along he
verge of the road under the first pokeberry bush south of the gap.
Brilliant!
A number of immature White-crowns and some White-throats were also
present. The Golden-crowned was a bit of a bully, chasing off any other
sparrow that came too close. After a while, Tyler and Jane drove up
behind us and also got good looks. It started to snow a bit as we got
ready to leave.
Off then to the Rough-leg spot but unfortunately the snow got very heavy at
about this time and visibility was poor. No sign of the RL but it could
have
been there. Only one hunkered down Red-tail and a shadowy Harrier
quartering the field in the snow.
We left the PA birder with some birdseed to scatter as it appered he was
going to be staying on a while.
The snow cleared of course as we were about half-way home...hopefully
the hawk will stay around for a while...
