Matt and everyone,
I hope that I screwed up the identification. Loggerhead would be a
much better bird and one that I have never seen on Delmarva :) When
Zach and I were first looking at the bird we spent some time talking
about the possibility of Loggerhead but thought that the mask was thin
enough and the pale lower mandible (which I put in my comments in
ebird) was enough to rule out Loggerhead. When Zach texted me about
the bird he called it a shrike because he wasn't sure. But after we
called a few people for insight and with better looks we thought we
had enough to call it a Northern. After looking tonight at the photos
and talking to you guys after your observation of the bird I've come
to the realization that I just don't know. Hopefully, we can make a
positive id with more people seeing and discussing the bird. Hope
everyone has a happy and safe New Year.
