I spent the morning at Hughes Hollow and then Riley's Lock. Nothing very exciting at HH - huge numbers of everyday birds. No red-heads, but plenty of other woodpeckers. Decided to leave when nearby gunshots became more frequent.
I headed over to Riley's Lock. A hairy woodpecker was right over my car in the parking lot. Not a lot of activity, but a common goldeneye fairly close in and a red-throated loon far out in the potomac. The loon was a couple of hundred yards upstream from the lock, about 2/3rds of the way across the river. Weather seems to be improving, I may try to go back later, hoping that maybe it will be closer... |
