I’ve decided to keep mine up all year – I have a Hummzinger
3 port feeder, which holds 8 oz.
My formula for nectar is 1 oz of regular sugar to 4 oz of water.   Prep couldn’t be easier – put the
ingredients into one of the resealable, clear snack size plastic bags.  Put the teakettle on and get water to
near boiling.  In a separate pan pour
the water and add the plastic bag.
After 10 minutes shake the bag side to side for 30 seconds to mix and
return to the water to cool slowly.
If you do this in the evening, your nectar will be ready to add to the
feeder the next morning.  Of course,
if you change the nectar during daylight hours, you will need to ensure that it
is not too hot.  At this time of
year you only need refresh the nectar weekly, more often if you are lucky
enough to have a hummer visit, I suppose.
