At least one Black-capped Chickadee has made it to Kent county. Found during the
Chesterville CBC yesterday in Sassafrass WMA. It was associating with a large
mixed winter flock including 8 Carolina Chickadees. The slow raspy call alerted
me that there might be one with the flock, I ended up getting excellent close up
looks and noted all the relevant field marks. I ran back to the car to grab my
camera, I was able to coax some of the flock back out of the pines including the
Black-capped. This time I was able to pick out the Black-capped naked eye, even
though the birds were back-lit against the gray sky, it's larger size compared
to Carolinas was very evident. Unfortunately, trying to digibin the bird while
it was moving around was rather hard and I did not get any photos.
The flock was moving through the backside of the pine stand on the right
(north) as you drive in the entrance road. This area is also accessible from
the small parking area just past the main entrance road off Turners Creek Road.
Walk the trails until you get to the pines.
