I don't know if this will lead anywhere, but i happened to see that the FRED NEWS POST ran a story on the WWD last week, perhaps as long ago as the previous Sunday.  I didn't buy the paper and having dial-up at home don't have the patience to try to find/read the article, but there may be additional info in the story that would shed some light on the current controversy.  Coincidentally, while out driving west of Jefferson on MD 383 this afternoon i happened to notice one in a group of Rock doves that showed a lot of white in the wing, although the tail was plain.  If i were a non-normal person, i.e. a non-birder, i might think to call it a "white-winged" dove, so Bill Hubick may be spot on with his musings.
