This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 4:30 PM.

Top birds this week are WHITE-WINGED DOVE* in MD, ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD* in
VA, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW* and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, GREAT CORMORANT, hawks, falcons,
RED KNOT, gulls, SHORT-EARED OWL, EASTERN PHOEBE, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE,
warblers, sparrows, SNOW BUNTING, RUSTY and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, crossbills
and COMMON REDPOLL.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE* continues to visit feeders near Monrovia, Frederick Co,
MD. It is at 12439 Fingerboard Rd, Monrovia, MD 21770 which is between
Bartholows Rd and Kemptown Church Rd. The feeders can be easily viewed from
the corner of Kemptown Church Rd and Sandra Lee Ct. Stay on the edge of the
road and do not trespass on private property. Because parking is limited it
may be necessary to park some distance away so you can see this bird without
trespassing or violating the neighbor's privacy. Parking at the Church is
allowed any day except Sunday before 11 a.m.

The hatch year female ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD* was still visiting feeders in a
yard in Chester, VA as of January 22.

The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW* found December 19 continues to be seen at
Chesapeake Farms, Kent Co, MD. The bird continues to be seen foraging with
other sparrows on the entrance road to the headquarters off Ricauds Branch
Rd. When viewing this bird, birders MUST remain in their cars or access to
the site may be denied.

A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD has been visiting a feeder in Callaway, St.
Mary's Co, MD first seen on January 22 and seen again on January 23,
24 and 25.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, found January 18 at the intersection of Daisy
Road and Bellis Drive, Howard Co, MD was seen again on January 19, 21 and
22. Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, accompanied by four SNOW GEESE were
noted at Riverstone Technology Park, Halifax Co, VA with sightings
throughout the week. The three ROSS'S GEESE at Thrasher's Lake, Amherst Co,
VA were still being seen as of Jan 23. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was
seen at Piney Run Park, Carroll Co, MD on January 20. 

Two ROSS'S Geese were in with the SNOW GEESE along Wildlife Drive,
Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on January 23. Two CACKLING GEESE were at
the C&O Terminus, Cumberland, Allegany Co, MD on January 20 and 22. Two
CACKLING GEESE were manicuring the golf course lawn at Burke Lake, Fairfax
Co, VA on January 23. They were seen again on January 24.

The HARLEQUIN DUCK at Fort Armistead Park, Baltimore, MD, continued to be
seen throughout the week. A HARLEQUIN DUCK pair were at the Ocean City
Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on January 23.

Three GREAT CORMORANTS were perched on the Sandy Point SP lighthouse on
January 22 and another GREAT CORMORANT was at the Ocean City Inlet on
January 23.

The BALD EAGLE at Blackwater NWR has laid the earliest egg every recorded
there and topped that by laying egg number 3 on January 20. A total of
forty-five BALD EAGLES were noted at Mason Neck NWR, Fairfax Co, VA on
January 22. Reports of NORTHERN HARRIERS came in from various sites during
the week. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was observed at the C&O Canal Terminus on
January 23. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen in a variety of sites including:
Fishing Bay WMA, Dorchester Co, MD on January 20; Three in Garrett Co, MD,
one on Russell Road, another near the intersection of Rte. 36 and Burning
Mines Road and the third from the Park & Ride on Rte 36 near I-68 on January
23; Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, Queen Anne's Co, MD also on January
23; Blue Mash Nature Trail on January 24.

A MERLIN was seen briefly at Ben Brenman Park, Alexandria VA on January 19.
On January 24, a MERLIN was present again and later a PEREGRINE FALCON made
an appearance.

A RED KNOT was on Skimmer Island, Ocean City on January 23.

A total of 61 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen from Jackson Landing at Jug Bay
Natural Area, Prince George's Co, MD on January 20. Two first-cycle GLAUCOUS
GULLS were found again at the Salisbury landfill, Wicomico Co, MD along with
an ICELAND GULL and four LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS on January 21. The
ICELAND GULL continues at Sandy Point SP, seen on January 22 and 23. An
ICELAND GULL, accompanied by three LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, was sitting on
the ice on Neabsco Creek, Prince William Co, VA on January 22. The ICELAND
GULL was seen again on January 23. The MOS Gull Workshop visiting the Elkton
landfill and North East Community Park, Cecil Co, MD on January 22 found a
GLAUCOUS GULL and three LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at the landfill and
another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the park.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was reported January 22 flying over the landfill at Blue
Mash Nature Trail.

An EASTERN PHOEBE was noted at Hughes Hollow and another was at Riley's
Lock, both Montgomery Co, MD on January 24.

BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES continued to pop up at widely scattered locations
throughout the area. 

ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were reported from a number of locations this past
week. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was spotted just north of Mile Marker 8 on the
George Washington Parkway, Alexandria, VA on January 24.

An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was picked out of a flock of sixty DARK-EYED JUNCOS
at Schooley Mill Park, Howard Co, MD on January 22. Another AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW was noted at a feeder near Piney Reservoir, Garrett Co, MD on
January 23. An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was at Blue Mash Nature Trail and two
AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on
January 24. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen at the intersection of US113 and
Mason Road, Worcester Co, MD on January 22. A VESPER SPARROW was noted at
Terrapin Nature Park, Queen Anne's Co, MD on January 23. A LAPLAND LONGSPUR
was seen on Harford Creamery Road south of the intersection with Bradenbaugh
Road, Harford Co, MD on January 24 and 25. Sixty four SNOW BUNTINGS were
reported from Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on January 19. 

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen feeding with a mixed blackbird flock in the town
of Nanticoke, Wicomico Co, MD on January 23. The BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS in
Nokesville, Prince William Co, VA were seen again on January 23 on the farm
just south of the intersection of Aden Rd and Fleetwood Dr.

Six cooperative RED CROSSBILLS treated birders on Briery Branch Road, near
the West Virginia State Line, Rockingham Co, VA on January 23. A flight of
10-12 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were spotted in New Germany SP, Garrett Co, MD
on January 19. A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL visited a feeder in Henrico Co, VA
several times on January 23. A COMMON REDPOLL was visiting feeders in
Frostburg, Allegany Co, MD on Jan 12.
