You can download George Ammann's interesting 1938 annotated report of his
observations of birds while surveying potential National Wildlife Refuge
sites at:

ftp://ftpext.usgs.gov/pub/er/md/laurel/Droege/

Its available as a 4 part scanned pdf or a 4 part OCR'd Word document.

Preface for both is: 1Birds_Ammann.....

A well done and valuable historical addition to the region's faunas.

We have the original report and the original photographs of the marshlands
(which are interesting historical documents in themselves) and would be
very interested in working with anyone who would like to reformat this
report, double check the OCR'ed versions, and create a more complete final
product, it is all public domain so there would be no copyrights, charges
etc. from us. It would be a matter of public service to those interested
in birds in these regions and I bet Norm, for one, would put it up on the
Osprey. We can make all the original photographs available.

Please pass this notice on to DE, VA, and NJ listservs.

Many thanks to Phil Davis for finding this report in the files of our
basement and historical background from Bob Ringler

Sunrise
...

The tide ?s at full; the marsh with flooded streams
Glimmers, a limpid labyrinth of dreams.
Each winding creek in grave entrancement lies
A rhapsody of morning-stars. The skies
Shine scant with one forked galaxy,?
The marsh brags ten: looped on his breast they lie.
