A friend and I walked the trail from Riverbend Park in Fairfax County to
Great Falls and then upriver from Riverbend both Monday and again Wednesday
afternoon. There are lots of ducks on the river: Hundreds of Ring-necked,
and Coots; 50 -100 each of Bufflhead and Common Mergansers ( much flying
around and mating behavior observed in both species), and 25 -40 Redhead,
mostly down by Conn Island. Saw a few Gadwall on Monday and Widgeon were
reported by several other folks, but not seen by us. Saw some eagles as
well, as always. And, it's always nice being on the river.
