Jon Ranson and I also found a woodcock this afternoon in Davidsonville Park. We were standing on the edge of a grassy roadway, quite close to the bird, and talking when it burst upwards from the grass about 1 1/2 - 2 feet away. It wasn't displaying, but apparently just wanted to get FAR away from the scary humans who wouldn't just walk on. First of season and for me a life bird (at least since I've been "officially" birding. (ebird listing).

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Woodcock in AA
Hi Folks,
Charlie Kucera and I had our first woodcock of the season this evening in
the powerline area near the end of Kembo Road, adjacent to the Swan Creek
property (near Key Bridge). The bird flew past us at about 6:12 p.m., with
no vocalization and no flight display, which in my experience is typical
behavior early in the season.
