Hi all,
Rick mentions the anecdotal information in the early Peterson guides -- I
recalled that as well, and went and looked up my favorite (this from the
1962 edition.):
Henslow's Sparrow:
Voice: "The Henslow's perches atop a weed, from which it utters one of
the poorest vocal efforts of any bird; throwing back its head, it ejects a
hiccoughing tsi-lick. As if to practice this 'song' so that it might not
always
remain at the bottom of the list, it often hiccoughs all night long."

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Crossley ID Guide
Afternoon all,
I had more of a chance to peruse the new Crossley ID Guide this
morning, after looking through most of the beautiful photos. I spent a bit
more time reading the text, and though Crossley says flat out that "I DON'T
LIKE TEXT", what he did write is rather interesting. Much of it reminds me
of my very first Peterson Field Guide to the Birds, a Pre-1970's edition,
for
all of its anecdotal information.
