Hi Everybody: I made a quick run to several locations after work last
evening (2/15). From Riley's Lock on the Potomac River I saw the following;
some were just upriver from the bridge and some were just above the
Violettes Lock rapids:

Horned Grebe 1
Pied-billed Grebe 1
American Wigeon 5
Scaup sp. 8
Bufflehead 4
American Coot 32

At Hughes Hollow I saw 13 Hooded Mergansers and heard several Wood Ducks in
the large western impoundment (my FOY).

My last stop was on Sycamore Landing Road (near the intersection of River
Road). At 6:10 I heard the PEENT of an American Woodcock (also FOY) off and
on for about 2 minutes. I did not hear it leave the ground or any evidence
of flight display. After 2 minutes it remaine quiet. I also heard a Barred
Owl call once.

This morning before work I made another quick visit to Riley's Lock and saw
the following:

Gadwall 2
Amer. Wigeon 14
Greater Scaup 32
Redhead 3 (drakes)
Bufflehead 1
Amer. Coot 33
Ring-billed Gull 5

An adult Bald Eagle flew upriver and made a seemingly halfhearted and
unsuccessful dive at the Scaup/Redhead flock and then continued north. There
were also 2 BRown Creepers working the trees on the north side of the bridge
just off the C & O Canal.
