I made two rather short trips into Winfield (about 4 miles away) yesterday, in the AM, and again in mid-PM. As I was driving (the same route) I noticed that nearly every stubble field held numbers of Canada Geese. So they are still around here, at least.

I saw a large flock flying last week - I didn't write it down, either. But I
emember it really caught my eye and I wondered if migration had begun. This
ould have been southern AA County. They were low, however, and I decided that
hey were probably actually only moving from field to field, albeit in very
arge numbers. So - no facts, just an impression.
What I HAVE noticed in several local ponds is that what remains seems to be
rimarily pairs of geese. I noticed this last weekend at Davidsonville, I
elieve, and on Monday in several locations between Cambridge and AA County. I
asn't listing at the time, so I can't be more specific.

i Jeff,
don't know if we missed the "big flight" yet but just wanted to add that one
ening over the last weekend (Friday or Saturday night I think) I was out in
r back yard, roaming along the fenceline at dusk, hoping for woodcocks in the
eld next door. It was a warm evening late in the week (should've written this
wn). Anyway, around dusk I began hearing the distinct sound of Canada Geese in
ight. I finally located the flock, coming from the west and heading basically
(from my location in Woodbine). I was struck by the huge number of birds in
e "flock", easily 2-3000 birds, and I remember thinking this is the largest
ock of geese I've ever seen in one flock, in the air. After that there were
veral smaller regular sized flocks too, heading the same way, but nothing as
ectacular as that flock. Don't know where they were headed. I often see flocks
re heading east, going to Piney Run Reservoir (I assume).

as anyone else noticed a lack of of Canada's now? Did we miss the spring
ght? Did birds disperse elsewhere gradually to the point that somehow we
n't notice? Am I just imagining this?!!!

ithin the last week or so, I noticed that the majority of Canada Geese around
e (Jug Bay and nearby Patuxent River areas) have left, although I don't
all anyone mentioning this. I did see one big high-flying V of them on
day, and think they were headed north. But that was the only one I saw this
k. Although I don't read every post, I read most, but I don't recall anyone
tioning it elsewhere. Usually when the Canada Goose Spring flight begins to
pen, there are several posts made commenting on it, as it is unmistakeable
n you see it.
rlier this year I heard from a goose hunting guide, who told me this winter
to the sustained harsh weather we had ("we" meaning essentially from here
th, along the Atlantic), that many of the resident Canada geese in New
land (non-migrants) were forced to migrate to the south (and came down here
the mid-Atlantic). I guess this is not common, and basically would be an
uption due to weather, if it in fact happened to a significant extent. We
tainly had a prolonged cold spell here, which sustained a major shortage of
llow open water areas for resting and feeding, so the puddle duck numbers
e noticeably low for much of this winter. The person I talked to is very
wledgeable about waterfowl, so I took his word that some considerable level
this happened this winter. I think it became evident sometime in early
uary, and I did notice a "pulse" of birds that seemed to appear at one point
s winter, but I forget when exactly (sometime between late December and early
uary I think).
s anyone else noticed a lack of of Canada's now? Did we miss the spring
ght? Did birds disperse elsewhere gradually to the point that somehow we
n't notice? Am I just imagining this?!!!
