There was a red necked grebe at fitzhugh run section of loch raven reservoir this am with a horned grebe. Last seen drift out to deeper water. - Kevin Graff

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Red-necked Grebe, B-c Chickadee continue in DC - 3/19/11
I birded Hains Pt. this (Saturday, 3/19) morning with Rob Hilton & Lisa
Shannon. Pleasant but a little brisk with winds coming out of the
north. Highlights were the continuing RED-NECKED GREBE showing
extremely well at the north end of the Washington Channel, the
continuing BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE heard singing in its usual area (river
side, just north of the first bathrooms, and some waterfowl: 11
RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 4 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, both LESSER & GREATER
SCAUP, plus a small flock of BONAPARTE'S GULLS. An EASTERN PHOEBE
dropped in at the point briefly, and an EASTERN BLUEBIRD called as it
flew north overhead.
I also saw the white-headed COMMON GRACKLE. I first saw this bird on
Feb. 17th in the exact same area (near the mulch piles). I meant to say
something about it because it was so unique, and I, too, had my heart
skip a beat when I first saw it (hoping it was a Yellow-headed
Blackbird). But it flew north out of sight and was gone, and I forgot
about it. So I was surprised to see it reported again this past week,
and then see it again this morning. Perhaps it will stick around to
breed (some of the grackles were gathering nesting materials).
The OSPREY pair has returned to the RR Bridge over the Potomac.
