This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, March 15, at about 10 AM. 

Top birds this week are ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD in VA and WESTERN TANAGER* in
VA.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, RED-NECKED GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, SANDHILL CRANE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK,
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, sparrows, RUSTY BLACKBIRD,
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, and COMMON REDPOLL.

Astoundingly, the ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD continues in Chester, Chesterfield Co,
VA, with the most recent report from March 12.

A WESTERN TANAGER* continues to visit a feeder near Roanoke, VA with a
sighting as recently as March 10; to get directions and a time to go call
540-563-9248.

The EURASIAN WIGEON at Paper Mill Flats, Baltimore Co, MD was last seen
March 8. A EURASIAN WIGEON was seen March 13 from Occoquan Bay NWR,
Woodbridge, Prince William Co, VA. The same day a EURASIAN WIGEON was seen
in the Rappahannock River from Leedstown, Westmoreland Co, VA. The
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER continued to be seen on the Potomac River at Violette's
Lock, Montgomery Co MD through 3/13. The WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at Mill Creek
Lake, Amherst Co, VA also continues to be seen with a report as recently as
March 14. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen March 13 at the end of Wharf Road
in Piscataway, Prince George's Co, MD. Four LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen
March 13 at the Cedar Haven Fishing Area in Eagle Harbor, Prince George's
Co, MD. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was also reported March 13 from Rocky Gap SP,
Allegany Co, MD.

While Horned Grebes were widely reported this past week, RED-NECKED GREBES
were only seen in a few locations including, Riley's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD
on 3/9; in Montgomery Co along the Potomac River a little downstream from
Seneca Creek on 3/12; from Prince William Co, VA where the Occoquan flows
into the Belmont Bay on 3/12; and from Knapp's Narrows, Tilghman Island,
Talbot Co, MD between Terrapin Dock and the bridge on 3/13. 

Nineteen AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were counted at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester
Co, MD on 3/9.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was hunting the marsh along Port Mahon Road, DE on March
12.

A GOLDEN EAGLE was reported from the Fort Smallwood Park Hawk Watch, Anne
Arundel Co, MD on 3/11.

There were two reports of SANDHILL CRANES in Northern VA the morning of
March 11. One was seen flying over Snickersville Tpk near Airmont in western
Loudoun Co; the other flew over Fort Hunt Park, Fairfax Co.

There were numerous reports from all over the area of AMERICAN WOODCOCKS
displaying vigorously. 

A few BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES are still being reported in the area.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found March 9 at Rockwood Park, Chesterfield
Co, VA.

An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was reported March 13 from Rocky Gap SP, Allegany
Co, MD. FOX SPARROWS seemed to pop up everywhere this past week. 

RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were reported from a number of different locations this
past week.

The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL continues to visit a feeder in Glen Allen,
Henrico Co VA, with a report as recently as March 12. Four WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were seen March 8 on the Frostburg State University campus in
Allegany Co, MD. 

A COMMON REDPOLL continued to erratically visit a feeder in Bluemont, Loudon
Co, VA with the last report on 3/12. One was also reported visiting a feeder
in Urbanna, Middlesex Co, VA from 3/12 through 3/14.

On March 19, there will be a pelagic trip out of Ocean City, in MD ONLY
waters, on the Morningstar, with Captain Monty Hawkins. Call 410-520-2076.

West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
