Bright sunshine and litte wind (is it REALLY going to snow tomorrow?)
took us out to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens -- mostly in hopes of finding
some Rusty Blackbirds at this, one of the favorite haunts. Well, no
blackbirds but some other harbingers of spring. A few early migrants and
a probable overwintering Thrasher were the most interesting. We also
drove through adjacent Kenilworth Park ("KP"), adding a few species to
the list:
Birds seen (36 spp.):
Double-crested Cormorant - 1
Great Egret - 2 (both in nuptial plumage)
Great Blue Heron - 3 (also in breeding plumage)
Canada Goose - 25+
Wood Duck - 8
Mallard - 10
Hooded Merganser - 4
Turkey Vulture - 3
Bald Eagle - 2 (1 adult, 1 imm.)
Red-shouldered Hawk - 2
Red-tailed Hawk - 1
American Kestrel - 1 (F, KP- probably one of the local breeders here)
Ring-billed Gull - 1
Belted Kingfisher - 2
Downy Woodpecker - 3
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 1
Pileated Woodpecker - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 1
Fish Crow - 25+ (No American Crows heard)
Tree Swallow - 2-3
Tufted Titmouse - 2
Carolina Chickadee- 3
White-breasted Nuthatch - 1
Winter Wren - 2
Carolina Wren - 8
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 2 (one singing)
American Robin - 1 (!)
BROWN THRASHER - 1
Northern Mockingbird - 1
European Starling - 3-4
Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warbler - 8
Song Sparrow - 12
Swamp Sparrow - 6
Northern Cardinal - 5
Red-winged Blackbird - 2-3
