Like Gail & Barry, I went to Kenilworth Gardens and Park in NE DC today
(Sat., 3/26). Funny that we should be there at the same time and yet
not see each other (unless they saw me first and ran the other way ;-)
Anyway, I had a very nice morning, but didn't find anything remarkable
either. The total species list was 48. Like G&B, I was unable to find
any Rusties. Highlights were:

Great Egret - I had 2 sightings and assumed it was 1 bird, but it could
have been 2
Merlin - 1 bird at KP (by the Jersey barriers)
Greater Yellowlegs - 1 bird in the lagoon
Wilson's Snipe - 1 bird flushed from the wet fields in KP
Tree Swallow
Rough-winged Swallow
Savannah Sparrow
Fox Sparrow - 3 near the beginning of the boardwalk

The worst part of the visit was while I was walking down the center dike
first thing in the morning, looking at the Great Egret roosting in one
of the trees to the left. I continued down the dike, looking at the
egret and completely missing the fact that I was approaching a Canada
Goose on a nest. Next thing I know, her mate is flying at my head,
trying to take me out. It came at me several times, hitting my face
with its wings. I was swinging frantically at the bird while trying to
run away from it. It was equally unnerving and angering at the same
time. I appreciate all the work that the NPS is doing to control their
population, but it's clear that the geese are winning. I know some of
you will say that the goose was just doing what it thinks is the right
thing to do and the park is there for them more than me, but the
resident geese are not native and are ruining the wetlands (much like
the Mute Swans). They need to be controlled.

Good birding,
