I made a very, very brief visit to the park this morning. I wanted to
mention one bird which I ebirded as a Bonaparte's Gull. That said, I
am not convinced that it was one. I couldn't justify calling it a
BLACK-HEADED GULL with the rather brief view I got of the bird flying
North past the point.

The gull had dark underwings and appeared larger than a Bonaparte's
Gull. The darkness could have been a result of the harsh morning
light. What struck me as I watched this bird in flight was that this
gull had a loftier, bouncing flight that appeared less tern-like than
a Bonie.

The likely species was Bonaparte's, but I could not rule out a
Black-headed Gull. The bird was flying solo, whereas most Bonies I've
been watching lately are in flocks of 25 or more birds.

Maybe Sue got to enjoy it at Ft. Smallwood later in the day???

Good Birding,
