With Norms okay, some may be interested in the following. Also, if you are interested in volunteering either at Patuxent or as a data entry person from home like I do, contact Jessica Zelt at www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bpp/,

                        March 30, 2011

                        Dear BPP Participants,

Through the efforts provided by NOAA's Climate Data Modernization Program (CDMP) and our worldwide network of volunteers, the BPP is excited to announce the release of a small initial data set of 40,000 migration records to the public on the BPP website. This is just part of a 120 year-old dataset, for all of North America, with hundreds of historically important participants of the past, and millions of data points, that can be used for many science and management applications, including climate change. You can download this initial dataset by visiting http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bpp/BPPData.cfm and we will continue to add data as it becomes available.

The North American Bird Phenology Program (BPP) would also like to announce that it has been featured in CDMP Annual Report video for 2011. The CDMP began in 2000, and was initiated by Congress to help modernize and improve access to the Nations climate data and information. The CDMP's goal is to preserve and make major climate and environmental data available via the World Wide Web. Since 2000 the CDMP has preserved over 54 million pieces of data, applications of this information expand far beyond the scientific community.

In 2010 CDMP provided funding to the BPP to assist with scanning the several million migration records the program maintains into digital form. The funding has allowed BPP office volunteers to focus solely on sorting through the migration records and preparing them to be sent to SourceCorp, in Mount Vernon Kentucky. SourceCorp's efficient scanning capabilities allow them to scan at a much higher rate than would have been possible by volunteers in the BPP office and to date has scanned over 580,000 records. Please see the attached CDMP Annual Report and video: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/cdmp/annualreport.html. This link is also featured on the BPP website: http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bpp/Media2.cfm.

This achievement would not have been possible without the help of the thousands of BPP volunteers assisting in our office and online who prepare these records and complete transcriptions once the records have been scanned. Through the combined efforts of USGS, NOAA, and citizen scientists we have been able to revive this incredible dataset and begin to release these records back to the public in a digital form.

                        Best,
