Visitors:
Steve Whitcomb, Jim Gibson
Weather:
Mostly cloudy becoming partly cloudy; 51-86 degrees; good to excellent
visibility; winds started out light, 0-3 mph and then became very strong,
mostly from the SSW, 14-20 mph, gusting to 33 mph
Raptor Observations:
Excellent all-around flight today with 13 species of raptors and
significant numbers of most. First Broad-winged Hawks of the season (6)
and an immature Northern Goshawk. Raptors were all over the sky and many
got very high as the temperature rose. The high birds passed by quickly,
apparently aided by a strong tail wind. We surmised that a sizeable number
could have been missed after we observed several higher birds only after
spotting lower ones. Our crew of good observers worked hard today.
Non-raptor Observations:
First of the season species: Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Chimney
Swift. First Caspian Tern was seen yesterday, another today. Also
observed: Northern Gannet (2), Palm Warbler (3), Common Loon (13)
