Another cool walk beneath a low overcast, this time at the lower end of
L. Roland, currently under construction upgrades and only accessible on
Sundays. Fairly slow birding, but persistence was rewarded with a no. of
nice sightings.
Fishing at the lower end, just above the spillway, an OSPREY; later, at
the upper end, opposite the boat landing, an adult BALD EAGLE perched;
Also at the upper end, 4 PINTAIL DUCK, a SOLITARY S'PIPER, 2
PALM WARBLERS, a no. of RW B'BIRDS, and a couple of dueting
BARRED OWL; observed elsewhere, 2 PB GREBE, 5 spp. of 'peckers
including PILEATED and 2 SAPSUCKERS, both CROW, WB NUT-
HATCH, BG GNATCATCHER, 2 MYRTLE WARBLER, probable RC
KINGLET, PHOEBE, CHIPPING & SONG SPARROW, and a
SPOTTED S'PIPER feeding just below the spillway. Total of 34 spp.
An addidtional note: later, while in n. Balto. Co. having a cuppa with
fellow birder Jeanne Bowman, we observed a resplendent PURPLE
FINCH at the feeder. A bit later, after the birds vamoosed, we saw
perched near the ground a lonely, hungry-appearing imm. SHARP-
SHINNED HAWK. After it scuttled beneath some bushes, it then
sashayed out with an accelerating swoop.
