Went off to find out how early it is that Prothonotaries show up around
Harpers Ferry. Apparently not quite this early. However the bluebells are in
full bloom right now, so go anyway.

Consolation prize - a singing and well-seen YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. This
was right where the C&O trail bends around Lock 36. Also had a singing
NORTHERN PARULA in that area. Many LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH seen and heard.
GNATCATCHERS were also plentiful. Just one pair of WOOD DUCKS flew off from
my side of the river. Usually have to scan under the brush on the Virginia
side with the bins to get those.

Had a FOX SQUIRREL run up the trail ahead of me. This is the reddish one
that is probably related to his more famous cousin on the Delmarva. I tend
to think of this one as a more northerly species because I get them a lot in
Garrett County. I think they are rare down here but if I'm wrong somebody
with knowledge on this speak up.

I heard one song that sounded like a WARBLING VIREO. I think it's probably
early for those. I was having trouble hearing some of the songs today over
the roar of the river. If anybody thinks we're having a dry spring, take one
look at the Potomac. I've probably never seen it higher but then I wasn't
around the few times it has flooded. Hopefully it will choose to do that
further downstream.
Right now the idea of it crashing thru the halls of congress has some
appeal to it.

I also stopped at Lilyponds. About the only new thing to report is that
the PURPLE MARTINS are back. Not much else there that I found. I tend to
wander around the place hoping for some odd rail to slip accidentally into
view. It rarely happens. Then I go home and read some post on here from
somebody that found a dozen of them over there. Good for them.
