Yesterday evening I got out of my car to the sound of Chimney Swifts overhead; and this morning I left the house to the sound of a House Wren calling.
Last Sunday Paul and I spent about two hours in Leakin Park, Baltimore City, and saw our FOY Black and White Warbler & heard our FOY Northern Parula. A Louisiana Waterthrush was still vocalizing by Hutton Avenue. There were Blue-gray Gnatcatchers in abundance. Sightings included two flyover Bald Eagles and a vocalizing RUSTY BLACKBIRD. A couple of Black Vultures were resting in trees, which was pleasant. We saw four in the trees earlier this month. Typically we just have flyovers.
We took a short trip over to Cooks Lane to check on the Yellow-crowned Night Herons. We counted 10 nests and I believe saw 12 birds (Paul has seen as many as 18 at the sight). Every nest had a heron either on or near it. We parked in a space across the stream from the Millstream Inn. Someone had dumped some trash, including a very fragrant bag covered with maggots and beetles. Distracting!
