Hi All,
After checking out mirgation forcaste from http://www.woodcreeper.com/, I didn't have much hope for any new migrants today. Biking down to Hains Point before work, most of the GREATER and LESSER YELLOW-LEGS had left as the ephemeral ponds on the golf course dried up (but 1 Lesser was still there).
At the Maintenance yard, I was surprised by a small dark bird that flew into a far tree. As I rushed over to figure out what it was it began to sing. Crossing my fingers that it wouldn't leave before I repostioned myself, I was treated to a handsome mal ORCHARD ORIOLE.
The NORTHERN WATERTRUSH had moved to another wetspot by the western golfcourse fence and was joined by a fiesty LOUSIANA WATERTHRUSH. The latter chased the northern, and seemed to win out.
Leaving work early due to internet issues I walked home (binos in hand) with a co-worker. Her experience working at Hawk Mountain, PA was helpful as we saw a variety of soaring birds including BLACK VULTRUES, RED-TAILED HAWK, PURPLE MARTIN and COMMON RAVEN! The Raven was soaring directly above us - affording great views, and confirmation by my expert co-birder! I know they have been seen east and south of DC, and even at the National Zoo recently, but for some reason I thought I'd never see one in the City.
All in all, I think Woodcreeper.com was right about migration - not a lot of new stuff, but the few FOY birds we saw today were well worth getting out there with the binos!
