Based on Jim Peters' sighting of the Tricolored Heron yesterday, I ventured to
Fort McHenry this morning.
The bird is still there. Go to the vicinity of the large marshy area at the sw
corner of the park. After a lot of standing and scoping, I saw the bird in the
pond located to the far back and right of the marsh (as seen near the paved
walkway near the shoreline).
The heron was perched on the double decker bird house whose pole sticks into the
pond. (Double decker: i.e. Tree Swallow house on top of a Wood Duck house). The
bird preened itself on top of the Tree Swallow house, as it ducked from time to
time for diving Tree Swallows. After some time the bird flew out of site along
the north shore of the pond. With a little patience and luck the bird may be
spotted. Scope is necessary.
Other birds of note: 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, Caspian Tern, Wilson's Snipe
(heard), and a kingbird (ok, it was 2 Easter Kingbirds).
Good Birding!
